Jaipur Blue Pottery contains no clay. Artisans work a dough of ground quartz stone, powdered glass and fuller’s earth, shape each piece by hand or in a mould, paint it with cobalt oxide, then glaze and fire it once. There is no second firing to correct a mistake, which is why every piece that leaves the kiln intact carries a small, unrepeatable character. The craft is a registered Geographical Indication, “Blue Pottery of Jaipur” (GI Application No. 66), an official record of its origin and technique. It is made from a dough of ground quartz stone, powdered glass and Multani mitti (fuller's earth), bound with gum and water. It is shaped by hand or in moulds, hand-painted with cobalt oxide, glazed and fired once at a relatively low temperature.
